Seeking Approval of Appearance — The Link Between Social Media Use in China and Body Image Concerns

Various scholars have verified that viewing beauty-related content on social media encourages valuing these idealized and unrealistic body shapes. A person's ideas, feelings, and perceptions regarding their body are referred to as their body image. A verified scale was used to assess individuals' appearance-related social media awareness. The study collected data from 229 respondents in China, aged 15 to 60, intending to examine whether individuals' preferences for receiving feedback from strangers or close peers would influence their body image concerns. The results show that people who prioritize comments from unknown people about their photos tend to be less satisfied than those who prioritize comments from people close to them. In addition, the study finds that men have a more neutral attitude towards related content, while women have a more positive attitude. In addition, the study highlights that the proportion of men and women who do not engage in photo editing habits is almost equal, suggesting that when examining the influence of social media on body image, further examination of the mental differences between the sexes is required.

Contemporary Media's Impact on Society and Culture

Media is an important part of social civilization and has profoundly changed people's daily life. In today's society, anyone can become a new media blogger by posting original works on the Internet, as the communication methods of new media have become more diversified, visualized and entertaining. Undoubtedly, such a simple and rapid form of communication has brought great challenges to the inheritance and dissemination of traditional culture. In order to alleviate the negative consequences of contemporary new media on the inheritance of traditional culture, traditional media practitioners and cultural scholars should provide more cultural support, establish correct values for new media, encourage them to participate in the construction and development of social culture and promote rational thinking and cultural cultivation and connotation through understanding the cultural support provided by cultural scholars and avoiding over-entertainment. The traditional media and the new media are realizing diversified co-development, bringing the new media a broader vision and deeper cultural values through the traditional culture, so that each of them can take what they need and benefit the social civilization on the basis of integration and competition, and their influence will be largely related to the development of the society.

The Influence of “Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch” on Japanese Zen

This paper is based on speech of master Hui-neng and his well-known " Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch", which showed us the endless wisdom by Hui-neng’s enlightenment. There are some different version of “Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch” till now in the world. Based on master Jing-hui’s viewpoint, “the original Sutras of Caoxi" was the oldest version. No matter how the methods of enlightenment are different, they are helpful to see one’s self-nature. Let us think about what Chinese Zen is, what the awakening mind is, and so on. In the process of Zen being introduced and inherited into Japan, this paper selects two representative figures of Japanese Zen. One is master Myoan Eisai who was the founder of Rinzai Zen, and the other is master Eihei Dogen who brought the Sōtō school of Zen from China to Japan. Development of Art and Religion Through Compromise: Medieval Christian Art and Chinese Religious Art

The significance of this paper lies in the analysis of medieval religious art in China and Europe, which sheds light on how the intersection of religion and art reflects cultural and societal values. To understand the delicate balance between artistic expression and religious influence, this study delves into the development and evolution of religious art during the medieval period. The comprehensive comparative analysis is conducted using an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural approach that integrates perspectives from art history, history, religious studies, and aesthetics. The findings reveal that while initially, art in both regions was predominantly influenced by religious ideals, it gradually asserted its independence and shifted from a God-centered to a human-centered approach. The results of this study imply that despite its oppressive origins, religious art managed to harness religion as a catalyst for innovation and enrichment, showcasing the resilience and adaptive capacities of art.

The Negative Transfer of Chinese Phonology on Students’ English Accents and Its Impact on Accent Perception

This paper focuses on the impacts of Chinese phonology on students who learn English as a second language from the production and perception sides. For the production side, this paper focuses on the impacts of Chinese phonology on students’ English accents, taking the phoneme /ɪ/ as an example, based on the framework of negative transfer proposed by Edward Thorndike. For the perception side, this work explores whether there is a correlation between the students’ pronunciation accuracy and accent perception. In this work, ten Chinese international students were invited as subjects for the experiment, and the matched-guise test was chosen as the methodology. The results in this work show that negative transfer did occur when Chinese students pronounce the phoneme /ɪ/, and it seems that pronunciation accuracy doesn't correlate to their perception of accents. The findings have implications for English education and provide suggestions for Chinese students to improve their pronunciation accuracy as well as their perception of accents.

Investigating Idiomatic English for Chinese ESL/EFL Learners: Corpus Investigation of Using the Genitive Marker in English Written Texts

While the genitive marker in English is early encountered in language teaching, the result of learning is seldom researched over the past 20 years in mainland China. This paper describes queries of how the genitive marker in English is used in British National Corpus and by Chinese native speakers in Longman Learners Corpus. Results showed that: 1) Chinese native speakers and English native speakers have different lexical choices for the possessors and the possessums before and after the marker; 2) the difference might be because of culture, mother tongue, and the learners’ limited understanding of English word meaning; 3) Chinese learners sometimes overuse ’s in a N-N genitive. The contribution of this paper is to alarm on non-idiomatic usages of small, critical English language morphemes by Chinese learners of English as a second or foreign language (ESL or EFL), and even greater issues of language learning attitude and teaching methodology.

The Exploration of Translation Strategies from the Perspective of Intercultural Communication

Various social and cultural factors have influenced language as a communicative and cultural carrier of human society. As a form of communication between diverse languages and cultures, translation is a process of transforming language symbols and cultural transplantation and abutment. To facilitate cultural exchanges between China and other countries while serving cross-cultural communication, it is of great significance for translators to deeply comprehend the discrepancies of artistic images between the source language and the target language, choose appropriate translation strategies, and correctly deal with various problems triggered by cultural ideas and other cultural factors. All in all, this paper has indicated that the role of translation in realizing the transformation of information should be given full play to the promotion of human communication, and cultural diversity is supposed to be respected sufficiently in the process of intercultural translation, which is contributive to the language education and the translation field.

The Use of Transliteration in Contemporary Video Game and Its Influence on Consumers: A Case Study of Elden Ring

This work concentrated on the quality of video game localization in China, especially the use of transliteration in text translation. Examples of existing Chinese-localized video games are documented and analyzed, and survey-based research is conducted to examine the response of the Chinese player community to the localization quality in a specific, representative case: Elden Ring. The result suggests that the abuse of transliteration has caused ambiguity to a notable extent among Chinese player/consumer communities, misguiding them to interpret the game content in unexpected ways. This work pointed out several flaws in the current video game localization in China. With best hope, the work could serve as a starting point for future studies in the area and provide meaningful improvement suggestions to Chinese translators in their work related to video games.

The Sogdian Rise: Revisiting Factors That Contributed to the Success of Sogdian Merchants in Gansu Around 313 C.E.

Based solely on Sogdian ancient letters II and V, this article reexamines two factors that are commonly supposed to have contributed to the success of Sogdian merchants around 313 A.D. and then further explores certain commercial characteristics of Sogdian traders at that time. While scholars list Xiongnu-China war and the Sogdian post system as two vital factors that led to Sogdian traders’ success, Sogdian merchants in Gansu at that time consider Xiongnu-China war as a disaster, and they didn’t completely trust the their own post system according to their letters. These factors were not thought of as being crucial to the success of these Sogdian merchants by themselves. Based on their commercial behaviors in the letters, Sogdian merchants seem to be neither open nor good at grasping business opportunities. While these two characteristics seem to have been considered key determinants of mercantile success since ancient times, Sogdian merchants were still able to succeed in their business without outstanding abilities in these two fields. Therefore, exploring factors that truly contributed to the success of Sogdian merchants may provide a new insight into commerce in the old days. Besides, the lessons drawn from the experiences of Sogdian merchants may be used for reference by people who wish to gain commercial success today.

Guest-Worker Programs: One Possible Path out of Poverty

This paper examines how facilitating emigration through guest-worker programs can provide an effective pathway out of poverty for Haitians while also benefiting Haiti through remittances and circulation of human capital. In this work, theories of migration and development are applied to analyze the potential impacts of expanding opportunities for Haitians to temporarily work abroad. The paper argues that managed migration can accelerate development by increasing worker remittances that reduce household poverty and provide investment capital. Circular migration also encourages human capital development as workers gain new skills abroad they can apply upon return. However, possible unintended consequences such as visa overstays and income inequality are discussed. Overall, the analysis builds an evidence-based case that carefully designed guest-worker programs represent a promising policy option for poverty alleviation and growth in Haiti.

How Can China Escape the Middle-Income Trap?

As one of the most widely discussed terms in recent decades, the “middle-income trap” refers to a dilemma in which middle-income economies struggle to achieve high-income status. After becoming an upper middle-income country in 2010, China has been stuck in the middle, facing the problem of economic stagnation. This research focuses on the steps taken by the countries that have successfully escaped the middle-income trap and figures out how those actions can shed light on the policy-making in China. The conclusion drawn from the work is that the Chinese government should present a co-creation and pro-industry attitude towards private sectors for industrial upgrading and developing vocational education, enhancing the connection between schools and enterprises in providing courses and pipelining talents. This work points out the policies China can work on to escape the middle-income trap by adjusting the relationship between the government and enterprises and transforming its rich population resources into a reliable reserve of highly qualified labor forces.

The Impact of Chinese Consumers' Perception of Scarcity of Goods on Their Consumption Behavior

Chinese people have been repeatedly isolated in the nearly three years of the epidemic, and after the end of Covid-19 in China, the number of large-scale events such as concerts with a large number of people increased sharply. As a result, people's desire to buy tickets became urgent, which led to the scarcity of tickets. In this study, the authors used two questionnaire surveys to study the behavior of Chinese consumers in the face of the scarcity of concert tickets. The authors found that after tickets were sold, Chinese consumers became more anxious and were more willing to pay tens of times more for tickets than the original price since they feel that tickets were scarcer after selling, and their anxiety levels also vary depending on which social media is used most frequently. Therefore, this research paper could help Chinese merchants better understand the psychology of Chinese consumers to some extent, thus helping them design better sale strategies that can promote consumption.
