The Resistance to the Male Gaze in Chinese "She Theme" TV Series: A Case Study of The Romance of Tiger and Rose

With the improvement of Chinese women’s economic strength and social status, “she theme” has become a popular trend in film and television. It shows women’s resistance to the male gaze, but there are certain limitations. The “she theme” TV series The Romance of Tiger and Rose set in a unique fictional society that regards females as the primary sex. Taking this drama as an example, this essay analyzes the new form of “she theme” TV series to resist the male gaze. By analyzing the characters’ images, it is concluded that the women in the drama avoid the stereotypical effeminate, fragile and lustful appearance in terms of figure and appearance. The women in the drama are strong, career-minded and occupy a more powerful position in heterosexual relationships. The external images of male characters tend to be lustful and feminine. Additionally, the loyal, sacrificial image of the male in the show conforms to the female audience’s imagination of a rational boyfriend. With its unique social background, the play overturns the social status of men and women. However, once back in the real world, the hidden male gaze remains.

A Study of Online Subcultural Groups' Emotional Climate under the Interaction Ritual Chains Theory

With the popularity of the internet, more and more social events and issues can be widely disseminated and discussed by people online. In a certain social background, a specific emotional climate will be naturally formed among internet users who share the same views or interests or cultural backgrounds, especially among online subcultural groups. Through the literature review, there is a large amount of research on online subcultural groups and research on emotional climate; however, there is very little study of online subcultural groups’ emotional climate. Therefore, this study will adopt the Interaction Ritual Chains theory to explore the online subcultural groups’ emotional climate. The research question is how the online subcultural groups’ emotional climate is generated. By taking online subcultural groups in two types of websites - the Bilibili website and pro-anorexia websites- as cases, the process of generating the online subcultural groups’ emotional climate can be summarised. This paper finds that multiple and multi-level emotion sharing triggered by a specific event among group members is the process of forming interaction ritual chains, and the reason why members’ emotion sharing triggered by a specific event enables the group to generate an emotional climate is that the emotional energy and symbols produced by the interaction ritual created in emotion sharing are successfully shared by the group members, which can influence the emotional energy of groups that on a social dimension can be seen as emotional climate.

Role of Palmyra in the Formation of Roman View of the Far East in the 1st and 2nd Century

Roman imagery of the far east could be influenced by the near-easterners either in ideological dimension or in interactive dimension. Since Palmyra was one of the most important cities that linked together Rome and the far east, this essay will discuss the role of Palmyra in the formation of Roman view of the far east in the 1st and 2nd century and try to resolve two main questions: How Palmyrene merchants as middlemen promoted the Roman maritime trades with the far east? Besides, what role did they take in the formation and progress of Romans’ recognition of the far east? Based on the analysis of archaeological evidences and Latin literature which respectively infer the operation of Palmyrene commercial network and Roman imagery of the far east, it is concluded that Palmyrene merchants’ activities and their complicated ethnic identity had brought positive effects to the Rome-far east trade through which geographical and material knowledge was accumulated and thus led to a refinement of Roman view of the far east.

How Mandarin Influences R in the Accented American English of Chinese Learners

The use of English as a global language has led to a growing number of non-native English speakers, including Chinese learners, who speak English with an accent influenced by their first language. This phenomenon can be explained by the mutual exclusivity assumption, which means that our first language will interfere with the second language acquisition. This study examines the role of the English phoneme/r/in the accented English of Chinese learners. The research investigates how Chinese learners perceive, produce, and acquire /r/in English and the challenges they face in mastering this sound. The study draws on existing research on the mutual exclusivity effect, second language acquisition, and phonology employing a qualitative method to analyze data collected from Chinese learners of English with the help of Praat. The findings reveal that Chinese learners encounter difficulties with /r/ due to the absence or different phonetic realization of this sound in their native language. These learners often struggle with both the perception and production of /r/, leading to various types of mispronunciation. The study also identifies factors that contribute to the challenges faced by Chinese learners in acquiring /r/, including the influence of their first language, the age of acquisition, and the exposure to English input. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of teaching strategies that target the specific needs of Chinese learners in mastering/r/and improving their overall English pronunciation.

The Influence of Advertisement Disclosure on Consumers' Consumption Intention in Celebrity Marketing

With the rise of social media and the trend of digitization of traditional media, how information is communicated is undergoing tremendous changes. Commercial messages have begun to penetrate news, entertainment, and other areas, creating a tsunami of economic benefits from them. Celebrity marketing is particularly prominent. However, there is a phenomenon that by concealing the commercial nature of their content, brands and celebrities make it impossible for users to recognize the nature of advertising, resulting in misinformation and deception. Under such a background, this study uses the documentation method to investigate how different levels of advertising disclosure affect consumers’ willingness to consume. The conclusion suggests that advertisement disclosure has a considerable positive effect on consumers’ consumption intentions. Therefore, marketing brands should guide their audiences to dialectically view the commercial attributes of celebrity marketing so that they can build good customer relationships and promote the success of their marketing strategies.

In ‘The Wilderness’ by Cao Yu, the relationship between Qiu Hu and the characters in ‘The Wilderness’ is one of ‘seeing’ and ‘being seen’, and they are always under the pressure of ‘seeing’. The Influence of Shandong dialect on English learning

Phonology—the material shell of language—has its own peculiarities because language structures and realizations vary. Behaviorist phonological theory implies that prior phonological patterns interfere with second-language communication. Learners inadvertently transfer their native language pronunciation to foreign language acquisition. The transfer is a psychological phrase that used to refer primarily to the influence of former learning on subsequent learning but now refers to the influence of one type of learning on another. Positive and negative transfers exist. English is Indo-European, while Chinese is Sino-Tibetan. distinct language families mean distinct phonological intonation systems and pronunciation patterns, therefore negative transfer of phonological learning is inevitable. Chinese students learn various dialects, each with its own system, and these dialects deeply affect English phonological intonation learning. This paper examines the transfer effect of the Shandong dialect on English phonology and the negative transfer of dialects to English intonation learning. The phonological system differs in terms of consonant parts and pronunciation methods, and the intonation system differs in tone, intonation, stress, and rhythm.

Research on the Relationship between Language, Natural Environment and Mode of Production—Taking Thai as an Example

Language acquisition is a challenging endeavor that is influenced by environmental, historical, and industrial factors. This research is done to investigate the interconnection between these components of language development. Thailand offers a suitable opportunity to discover the role these factors play. This paper combined the research of Caleb Everett, Pinkerton J, and Moran S, applying those theories to a more local context in Thailand. By interviewing professional Thai language practitioners, people can get a more reliable and realistic sense of the internationalization of the Thai language. The globalization trend has an effect on the absorption of English-originated words. Furtheremore, because the terrain and the plantation patterns in Thailand are unique, language as a communication tool is shaped by them. Moreover, the shape of the nose has the potential to affect the vocalization of language. This leads to the degree of use of nasal sounds in their ethnically used language.
