Technological Dystopia: Hindered Democratization of Technology in Margaret Atwood’s The Heart Goes Last

Margaret Atwood constructs a chaotic and disorderly dystopian society in The Heart Goes Last, where the technology is turned into a tool for manipulation, exploitation, and objectification of people. This article attempts to analyze the undemocratic use of technology depicted in the Positron project and the obstacles it poses to the development of technological democracy from the perspective of Andrew Feenberg’s critical theory of technology. The article analyzes the undemocratic technology in the book from both the physical and mental aspects, arguing that it strengthens control and surveillance over citizens’ bodies and manipulates their mental world, severely violating citizens’ human rights. Atwood portrays the social problems resulting from the obstacles to democratization of technology in the book, revealing that undemocratic use of technology brings not well-being but deeper disasters. This rings an alarm bell in the context of rapid scientific and technological development, prompting people to reflect on how to better use technology for the benefit of humanity and promote democratization of technology.

A Study on College Students’ Satisfaction with Entrepreneurial Policies from the Perspective of Publicity and Optimization Research

This research aims to analyze college students’ satisfaction with entrepreneurial policies from the perspective of publicity, identify factors influencing satisfaction, and propose a path for optimizing entrepreneurial policy publicity strategies. A questionnaire survey and random interviews were conducted among university students in Wuhan, with 100 questionnaires distributed and 100 valid responses collected. The study reveals that surveyed college students exhibit high satisfaction in three dimensions of entrepreneurial policy publicity: clarity, audience appeal, and promotional intensity. However, satisfaction is comparatively lower in three dimensions: accessibility of policy information, promotional intensity, and the sustainability of promotion. To enhance college students’ satisfaction with entrepreneurial policies, optimization efforts should focus on four aspects: the platforms for publicity, communication channels, target audiences, and content of publicity. This approach aims to effectively maximize the impact and efficiency of entrepreneurial policies for college students.

An Overview of Interaction within Pre-modern East Asian Region Through Buddhist Impact

Scholars have researched the impact of Buddhism on pre-modern and modern East Asia from different aspects, both within and between politics (states since the late 19th century): art, ideology, cultural practice, and food. Among existing academic literature on Buddhism’s impact on the interaction between polities within East Asia, the expansion of certain material cultural elements and cultural concepts and foodways are among the major focuses. This paper employs the anthropological understanding of non-material and material components of culture. The “working” anthropological definition of religion is combined, to summarize and categorize the existing research on Buddhism’s impact on pre-modern East Asian culture. Understanding culture in its material and non-material components, and its relationship with religion through time and space leads to this article to structure the relationship between Buddhism and pre-modern East Asian cultures into its expansion, its development, and its impact on different subcategories of a culture. The overview suggests an increase in future research on the multidirectional interaction of Buddhist pre-modern East Asian cultures and Buddhism’s influence on greater foodway within different pre-modern East Asian societies.

Exploring the Temporal Expressions in Chinese from the Linguistics Perspectives

Chinese offers an intriguing linguistic terrain for temporal expressions that is vastly distinct from many Indo-European languages, which use verb conjugation structures for this purpose. This paper delves deep into China's nuanced temporal nuances, exploring their implications on time delineation using uninflected verbs. Focusing on contextual clues, adverbs, particles and sentence structure we observe the interaction among these components that ensure clarity and precision when conveying temporal information. Notably, temporal adverbs such as "Gang Gang" and "Gang Cai", when used with aspect markers, create layers of temporal ambiguity which underline how language's inherent flexibility relies on shared contextual understanding. By conducting a comprehensive analysis of Chinese temporal expressions, this paper highlights the adaptability of languages, as well as their mutually reinforcing relationship between grammar and pragmatics, and culture and cognition in communicating time's complexity.

Research on the Compatibility of Quantum Science and Marxist Philosophy

As an epoch-making achievement in the field of natural science, the scientific principles of quantum mechanics, such as nonlocality, entanglement and decoherence, and role at a distance, have triggered many different interpretations and controversies in the field of philosophy, among which idealism, metaphysics, and agnosticism are based on which to question or even deny dialectical materialism. Marxist philosophy has always closely interacted with natural science. In the face of new and old propositions in quantum mechanics, such as uncertainty principle, quantum tunneling, large distance zero interaction measurement, and Poincare regression of multi particle quantum system, we can promote its compatibility with the new world outlook and methodology of quantum science in the intertextuality interpretation. Quantum mechanics reveals the "intermediate phenomenon" in the process of understanding the micro world, highlighting the dialectical characteristics of materialistic epistemology; It emphasizes probability, but denies that uncertainty is subjective conjecture, defending the objectivity of existence; For the movement and change of things, the status of the contingency category has been improved and the linear causality has been exceeded, but the existence of universal and inevitable connection has not been fundamentally denied.

The Stream-of-Consciousness in “The Mark on the Wall”

The chaos and destruction brought about by World War I prompted people to seek new forms of expression. In the 20th century when Woolf lived, women were greatly constrained, and they had almost no time of their own. However, this was also the period when the first wave of feminism began to emerge. By studying Woolf's work, we can see that the pioneers of modernism and feminism had completely different views and perspectives from people who hold traditional techniques. Woolf is famous for her stream-of-consciousness technique; therefore, it is necessary to examine how she uses this technique to express her thoughts in “The Mark on the Wall,” her first venture into the realm of stream-of-consciousness. This paper examines Woolf’s attenuation of narrative time and her use of a single character, “I.” In addition, I suggest that the images and personal pronouns used by Woolf also demonstrate her pursuit of freedom and her feminism. Studying Woolf's first stream-of-consciousness short story “The Mark on the Wall” is essential for understanding Woolf’s early writing as well as tracing her evolution as a writer.
