Representing China in the British Museum: Do Museums Perpetuate Historical Biases?

Museums have never been neutral. Public museums and exhibitions that originated in colonial times are accused of passing on biases that feature Euro-centric interpretations of history. This paper investigates the nature of bias and the history of museums and their biases, and then focuses on the representation of China in the British Museum as an elaborate case study. The paper argues that from the British Museum’s virtual collections and public resources, the descriptive text and collection highlights in the China galleries reflect implicit and biased historical perspectives of China in the UK, exhibiting a contrast between the British appreciation of exotic Chinese art and contempt towards China’s social status arising from colonial trade. This paper provides a specific statement and analysis of western biases for colonial discussions and could contribute to decolonization actions taken in museums.

Exploring the Gender Differences in Various Mental Health Problems of Adolescents

Since society has growing demands on young people, the mental health of adolescents is very important in the current society. This article reviews the causes, gender differences, and effects of four psychological issues among adolescents including anxiety disorders, depression, social communication disorders, and Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The study reveals that among adolescents, girls are more likely than boys to experience the three mental health issues of social disorders, depression, and anxiety, while boys are more likely to experience ADHD. Moreover, this paper analyzes three areas: family, school, and government to discuss the solution for improving these issues and the current situation. Therefore, after reviewing previous literature and summarizing their findings, this paper contributes to emphasizing that girls have more probabilities to suffer from mental health problems than boys, thereby calling for society to pay more attention and offer more help to girls. Future research can work on how to reduce these conditions and propose some applicable solutions.

Dark Desires and Consent: A Response to Morgan

In the paper Dark Desires, Seiriol Morgan aims to argue against the claim that “universal participant consent is sufficient for the moral permissibility of a sexual act” which is largely accepted in contemporary western philosophy. This article examines Morgan's argument against such a claim and improves Morgan's two illustrative cases to better support his claim. It starts by clarifying the meanings of the terms "moral permissibility", "dark desires", and "consent" to make Morgan's argument easier to tackle with. Then, the strong and weak versions of Morgan's claim will be distinguished, and their plausibility will be examined. Finally, it concludes that (i) only the weak version succeeds, and (ii) Morgan succeeds in showing consent to be insufficient for the moral permissibility of any sexual act.

An Analysis of the Influence of Post-war Culture on The Maltese Falcon Through the Femme Fatale Character of Bridget

Culture is a product of social groups, and art as a medium presents people’s ideas. It has become particularly important and necessary to study the integration of culture into art, that is, how art presents a certain culture to understand society. This paper selects the post-World War II society and the resulting post-war culture. The paper discusses existentialism and feminism in post-war culture by examining the portrayal of the female character Bridget in the film noir The Maltese Falcon based on Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic personality theory. Summarizing the film and examining the existential femme fatale character Bridgette, the paper explores how the culture of postwar society influenced and reflected each other. The paper concludes that Bridgette, as a typical classic female character in a film noir, has an existential femme fatale personality that reflects the postwar culture that existed in society at that time. At the same time, cinema as an artistic medium interacts with and integrates with society.

Analysis of the Importance of Gender Identity Information and Sex Education in Social Media and School

“Rose adolescents” are a group of people with different behaviors that differ from their biological gender identity. But few people in society pay attention to this group. This is inseparable from the role played by the media in communication and the education of sexual knowledge. Biased general cognition will harm this group physically and psychologically, leading to social problems, such as school bullying. They need to be understood by the public, and the physical and mental health of young people also need to be protected and given attention from multiple dimensions. So, the paper will use three theories related to gender, media, and diversity, analyzing public stereotypes of gender diversity and, the social impact behind it. How does the media play an essential role in guiding public comments? What can sex education do to help? In the end, the article believes that when mass media is widespread and biased in disseminating social information, the resulting erroneous or misleading information needs to be managed and guided by the press and the family, school, and society for the mental health of young people.

Video Games and Gender Equality: How Has Video Gaming Become a Men’s Privilege?

Gender norms and gender exclusion in video games are worth discussing. Based on previous research on video games and gender equality, the article investigates how video gaming excludes female participation and becomes a male privilege. Understanding segregation is crucial because numerous video games today still feature misrepresentations of women despite the ongoing feminist movements that strive for equal rights. This article found that the video game industry was established by a male workforce that designed games to appeal to a male-centric market, thus the female voice is left out from the beginning. Women in contemporary video games are portrayed through the lens of male desire in which females are sexualized, powerless, and subordinate. They are excluded from the male-centric structure because of sexualization, sexual harassment, and workplace segregation. An optimistic vision of the future is also discussed due to the emergence of female voices in the gaming industry.

The Representation of Females in TV Drama: Taking “Nothing But Thirty” as Cases

The topic of this thesis is to study the performances of female characters in the TV series “Nothing But Thirty.” The goal is to see if they deconstruct and reimagine female characters' roles in Chinese film and television works. Today, with advances in mass media technology, feminism has become a public issue. In the wake of the #MeToo movement in 2017, there is an emerging trend in the portrayal of women in film and television. The visible presentation of the female image is inseparable from mainstream ideology. Given that “Nothing But Thirty” can be considered a female-dominated show, it would be interesting to examine the way women are represented on TV. This will help further promote the study of female representation in film and television.

Women’s Discourse Dilemma from the Perspective of Social Media: Taking Reports and Comments on Social Events on Weibo as an Example

The emergence of the new media period has transformed social media into a public forum for the dissemination of public information, and the enhancement of user voice and demand has given feminism a new context and given women a free platform to express themselves. However, the ability of women to talk freely still faces significant restrictions as a result of the long-lasting effects of history and culture as well as the bias of the news media system. This essay attempts to explain the current situation of the absence of women’s voices on the platform by using Weibo, the dominant force of Chinese social platforms, as the research object. The research method of case analysis is used to broaden the analysis based on the facts and material already available. The research results emphasize the plight of women’s lack of voice in society, and put forward some relevant countermeasures from three different perspectives: media, women themselves, and social culture, to encourage the growth of women’s voice on social platforms and ultimately achieve gender equality.

    The Possibility of Artificial Qualia

The discussions about qualia are mind-body problems. If artificial intelligence provides a functionally identical body, will it possess the same conscious experience? The possibility of artificial qualia, which is on the cutting edge of the development of artificial intelligence, will be the main topic of this essay. This paper argues the presupposition of the possibility of artificial qualia is the possibility of strong AI. Searl was the first person to question the possibility of strong AI by formulating the Chinese Room Argument. This paper introduces common objections from artificial intelligence practitioners and the development of modern AI, proving the invalid of the objection and claiming the possibility of strong AI. Next, this paper follows David Chalmers’ argument about the principle of organizational invariance and reconstructs Chalmers’ two Reductio ad Absurdum arguments to rebut objections. By formulating fading qualia argument and dancing qualia argument, the absent qualia argument and the inverted qualia argument are proved wrong. The principle can support the possibility of artificial qualia.

Examining the Successful Dissemination Buddhism along the SilkRoad into China Against the Political Backdrop ofthe Southern and Northern Dynasties

Nowadays, it is easy to take for granted the connection between Buddhism and Chinese culture. However, Buddhism was originally from India, and passed into China as a foreign religion. One particular period that Buddhism began to blend which Chinese culture appeared to be the Southern and Northern dynasties. The active nomadic activities during this period introduced both the possibility and need of Buddhism as a part of Chinese society. After this period, Buddhism truly gained momentum in Chinese history. This paper will examine Buddhism’s unique means of propagation, specifically how Buddhism managed to wield both interpretive and political power as important tools. Such observations could yield insight into the dynamics of political interactions in ancient China, as well as how such a structure incorporated religions and common culture into its reign. The paper hypothesizes that Buddhism’s ability to build connection with Chinese society was due to its unique power of flexibility and persuasion, which suited the political backdrop of the Southern and Northern dynasties well. This paper will discuss and seek to validate this thesis through three lenses: royal support, governance, and translation. The discussion will involve interpreting scrolls written by the ancient Chinese, to signify the contemporary political and intellectual importance of Buddhism.

Limits on Women's Power from the Fundamentalist Social System in the Islamic World

Based on the events in Iran and Afghanistan, which are hotly discussed in the current society, the discussion is carried out to trace the oppression of Islam on women. This essay examines the restrictions placed on women's power by the Islamic world's fundamentalist social structure. On the basis of relevant literature and studies, the contemporary living conditions of Iranian women are evaluated. It has been established that the deeply ingrained social standards of Islam, such as the dominance of men and the inferiority of women to contemporary fundamentalism, severely limit the authority of women and contribute to the low social position of Iranian women. The freedom to choose one's clothing, make new acquaintances, go out, and pursue education are all subject to power limits. However, in the realm of Islam, female consciousness is emerging.

Analysis of the Tragic Fate of "Lei Yu" from the Complex Character Relationships

"Lei Yu (Thunderstorm)" by Cao Yu presents the tragedy of Zhou Gong Guan, a feudal family in the Republican era, by characterizing different personalities, backgrounds and ethical relationships. As a dramatic work of considerable status in modern Chinese literature, "Lei Yu" contains many profound connotations. From its publication in 1934 to the present, "Lei Yu" has profoundly exposed the problems of the feudal family's autocratic and corrupt times through the meticulous and precise portrayal of its many characters' complex relationships and the gradual clarification of its historical past. This work exposes not only the conflicts of the members of the Zhou Gong Guan but also the class disparity and the status of men and women in the era through the class and gender of each member. At present, academic research on "Lei Yu" is very mature, but there is still some room for research on the analysis of the characters' relationship and tragedy of fate in relation to the author's view of fate and the imagery of "Lei Yu". Therefore, this paper will start with the interpretation of Cao Yu's view of fate, analyze the author's view of "the fatalism of gods and ghosts" and "the view of nature and heaven" in the preface, and then analyze the imagery of "Lei Yu" to derive the tragedy of fate. Then, through the analysis of the imagery of this work, the complex family conflicts and the characters' view of fate behind it are derived, and then the characters' characters, experiences and identities are carefully analyzed through both character tragedies and ethical tragedies, revealing the irresistible tragedy of fate in the relationship between the characters of "Lei Yu", which means that all characters in the play have tragedies in character and ethical relationships.

Women Image in Current Chinese Media and Its Consequences

The negative portrayal of women caused by the male perspective of the media industry needs to be addressed and rectified. In this way, the passive situation of women being “otherized” can be alleviated, and the misogynistic thinking caused by misleading information conveyed by the media can be improved. It is of great significance to rectify the media under the patriarchal concept to promote gender equality, slow down gender exploitation, reshape female image and enhance female subject consciousness. Mass media unconsciously spread the concept of male supremacy in a subtle way, which not only makes women suffer from the oppression of unequal patriarchal consciousness in the society, but also makes women’s cognition of their own gender group and self-image distorted. Reorganizing the media under the patriarchal concept can further promote male equality. Shaping a more objective female media image is of great significance for promoting gender equality, slowing down gender exploitation, reshaping female image and enhancing female subject consciousness.

The Relationship Between Derogatory Terms and Their Essentialism Condition — Focusing the Terms ‘X dog’ in China

In modern China, there has been a notable shift in the usage of 'X dog', disparaging words involving the word "dog" with a noun, resulting in a progressive diminution of its negative impact. Using Lynne Tirrell's theory of derogatory terms, this paper employs a combination of literature review and corpus analysis to explore the ways in which the essentialism condition has contributed to the historical prevalence of 'X dog' as a widely used derogatory term in ancient China, and how its shifting perception has impacted its usage in the modern era. This study gives vital insights into the intricacies of linguistic and social practices in Chinese society by exposing the deep relationships between disparaging terminology and the essentialism condition. In addition, the paper discusses potential disagreements and differing perspectives regarding the usage of pejorative terminology, providing nuanced explanations and perspectives on this contentious matter. Overall, this research presents a nuanced examination of the manner in which 'X dog' and other pejorative labels are created by historical, cultural, and linguistic factors, and highlights the need for more investigation into the intricate dynamics of language use in modern China.
