Comparison of the Differences in Face Perceptions Between China and the West

The current review aims to investigate the differences between the views of face in China and Western countries in the theoretical and practical aspects and demonstrate external manifestations of cross-cultural conflict. The study started by bringing in theories about ‘face’, involved comparing views from different researchers, and listed out some specific daily activities to illustrate how the face issue works in diverse countries. Significant differences were discovered in the views of ‘face’ in various cultures, and the gap was found to be more obvious in the activities in people’s daily lives than in theories, which leads people to treat things and act differently. Although more research is needed to identify the differences in nature and birth of theories, findings suggest a need to pay attention to these differences and how to use them to show respect for people from China or other Western countries in intercultural communication.

The Rewriting of Eileen Chang’s Female Characters and Its Significance in the Film Love After Love

In November 2021, the film Love After Love, based on Eileen Chang’s short story Aloeswood Incense: The First Brazier, was released, sparking widespread attention and controversy. Using the basic method of textual close reading, this paper compares and analyses the source text produced by Eileen Chang with the film text collectively interpreted by the film’s screenwriter and director to discover the rewritings and changes in the image of her female characters from the short story to the film, and to interpret such rewritings in the theoretical field of feminist literary criticism, in order to answer the question of how Eileen Chang’s portrayal of women can be adapted to and inspires the contemporary cultural context of China in the adaptation of contemporary creators. The film liberates the female characters in Aloeswood Incense: The First Brazier from the anxiety and pain of lack of desire and self-suppression and also gives them the possibility of reclaiming their dignity and selves, which, on the one hand, is adapted to the cultural context of the increasing call for women’s emancipation in contemporary China, but on the other hand, it has not yet escaped from the phenomenon of masculine writing that has been prevalent in the Chinese cultural context since the beginning of the twentieth century.

From Production to Viewing: The Presentation of Female Subjectivity in “Siren: Survive the Island”

As cultural products, female variety shows have the potential to challenge gender norms and promote gender equality. This study adopts feminist theory, social gender theory, especially the relevant content of postmodern feminist theory and audience usage and satisfaction theories. It closely reads the text of the Korean variety show “Siren: Survive the Island”. Considering the rise of streaming media and the promotion effect of the feminist movement on the production of such programs, this study focuses on the two levels of program creation and audience reception. It discusses how programs give women the right to speak in creation and how to break away from the male-centered discourse system. In the description of the identity of the contestants, the program selects powerful women who are difficult to become absolute protagonists in the past as narrative subjects so that women can jump out of the traditional society’s expectations of their identity. On the body’s performance, the show presents the contestants’ body from an equal and objective perspective, conveying a positive body concept. At the same time, the show largely meets the needs of modern audiences and inspires audiences’ consensus on female subjectivity and gender equality. This study aims to combine theory and practice, provide strategies for subsequent works, promote producers’ and audiences’ cognition of female subjectivity, call for a more open and inclusive environment, and promote further thinking and development on gender issues in the real society.

Chastity or Debauchery: Violetta's Portrayal in Verdi's La Traviata

This paper investigates Violetta, the female protagonist of Verdi's La Traviata, from a modern standpoint, extrapolating from the La Traviata reception to Violetta's portrayal in the text. Violetta Valery possesses qualities of both chastity and debauchery. In weighing in the two directions, Violetta's extravagance and resistance are greatly diminished to move closer to popular morality. Through a series of textual analyses and reception history investigations, this paper will incorporate a gender-related perspective to deconstruct the core of La Traviata's story in the context of contemporary values. In addition, the discussion on Violetta's image provides inspiration for examining the inner and outer space of the character itself. Considering the results, both the conception of the La Traviata story and the characterisation of Violetta are re-creations of the objectification of prostitutes in a patriarchal society. Multiple factors are involved and influence the transformation of Violetta's characterisation. It is also from the heights of modernity that these factors are able to be structured in a socialised and gendered context. Despite having the potential to become Europe's nineteenth-century Medea, Violetta Valery remains inevitably weakened in romanticised narratives and descriptions into a one-dimensional individual who combines both the stereotypes of chastity and debauchery.

The Influence of the Opera on the Spirit and Psychology of People in the 19th Century: Taking the Social Background and Singing Passage of “La Traviata” as an Example

Opera has now become one of the forms of entertainment for the public, not only because people have higher quality artistic pursuits but also because they can relieve the anxiety brought about by life and work when enjoying opera in the concert hall. The acceptance of classics by modern people is significant. However, in the era of opera’s origin and rapid development, the relationship between the masses and the social background and the works has essential reference significance for how modern art and stage theatre adapt to the development of the times. This article uses an example of a fragment of the Italian musician Verdi’s masterpiece La Traviata to explore its influence on the thinking of the masses in the 19th century. The study found that the emergence of La Traviata is not only a continuation of the Enlightenment in the last century but also affects people’s re-examination of the darkness of the aristocratic class at that time, the inequality between men and women, and the difficult life of vulnerable groups.

The Spread of Female Body Anxiety and Appearance Anxiety in Modern Social Media

The Internet has now entered a phase of fast change. Social media is also developing and becoming more widespread as time goes on. However, the expansion of social media has also brought about certain issues, such as women’s anxiety over their looks and body shape, which is causing an increasing number of people to have both medical and psychological issues. People devote a lot of attention to women’s shape and looks since it is a prominent issue on social media, which makes women afraid to acknowledge their own beauty and forces them to continue pursuing beauty in the eyes of others. Review and case analysis are the primary research methodologies used in this study. The research for the paper shows that the strain of networking sites, including the use of self-timer software, being in competition with others, and some advertising marketing techniques is to blame for the rise in anxiety. The physical and emotional health of women may suffer as a result of these social demands. Following an analysis of these causes, this study suggests comparable remedies to help women achieve self-acceptance, and society also offers assistance to lessen women’s anxiety and foster healthy social growth.

How Do Internet Slang and Memes Affect Chinese Teenagers?

An increasing number of young people in this era of new media have access to the web, which is both simpler and more convenient to use. Internet users have contributed to the emergence of a new language and cultural phenomenon known as “Internet slang” and “memes”. Previous studies have addressed and evaluated the many spread phenomena of Internet slang and memes in the last decade, but there has been little focus given to teenagers, despite the fact that this demographic makes up an increasingly large proportion of Internet users. The influence that Internet slang and memes have on Chinese teenagers is the focus of this research. The research question is to analyze how the characteristics of online slang and memes affect Chinese teenagers. A review of the relevant literature and analysis of case studies form the basis of the research method. The research concludes that Internet slang and memes, with their simplicity, diversity, and sustainability, have a greater negative impact on teenagers’ language expression, perception of thinking ways, and mental health. The most feasible strategy to address the issue is the implementation of proactive steps by regulatory bodies to regulate and improve the digital environment. Parents and educators should take a balanced and patient approach to guiding teenagers to develop competence in utilizing language in a standardized manner.

The Contribution of Aspirated Feature Information of Initial in Mandarin-Chinese Monosyllable Word Processing

The passage mainly focuses on aspirated feature of stop consonants priming effect in Mandarin-Chinese monosyllable real spoken words. The experiment contrasted 4 prime conditions of “prime-target” pairs: homogeneous (pa1-pa1), aspirated feature (pha1-pa1), post-homogeneous (ma1-pa1) and unrelated (lu1-pa1). In the experiment, all tonal information is matched and the aspirated feature of initial in Mandarin-Chinese monosyllable real spoken words is the variant. The latter two pairs are control groups. The data were from ten Mandarin native listeners, then they were calculated and got the mean reaction time (RT), the standard deviation (std) and standard error (std. err). By comparing with the unrelated group, the other three shows that if some segmental information are matched, there will be significant negative priming effect. The first two pairs test whether aspirated feature activate priming effect at word recognition in Mandarin-Chinese monosyllable real spoken words by auditory priming, by comparing the homogeneous (H) group with the aspirated group and post-homogeneous group, the result shows that changing the aspirated feature do have a positive priming effect.

A Brief description of Korean Language Phonology and Its History: From the View of Sinosphere

This paper explores the historical and linguistic facets of the Korean language's development, emphasizing its profound ties to the Korean Peninsula and mainland China. Beginning with the use of Han characters dating back to the 12th century BCE, when Jizi sought sanctuary in Korea, the evolution of these characters into the native Korean script, known as "Hangul," in the 15th century is discussed. Hangul's transformation from addressing writing issues to symbolizing Korean cultural and national identity, particularly in the 20th century, is highlighted. The paper also delves into the distinctive vowel characteristics, consonantal complexities, and syllable structures of the Korean language, making it conducive to continuous speech. Additionally, it touches upon the challenges faced by learners, especially those from Chinese-speaking backgrounds, in mastering these linguistic features. This paper serves as a concise overview of the multifaceted nature of the Korean language's historical and structural elements.

An Experimental Phonetic Study on “Discontinuity-Continuity” Effects of Chinese Prosodic Boundaries at Different Levels under the Influence of Focus in Different Positions

The production of fluent speech in Mandarin requires the modulation of both discontinuity and continuity effects, with prosodic boundaries and focus stress serving as crucial control factors. Previous research has focused on the acoustic properties of focus which is independent of prosodic boundaries. In this study, whether different focus positions can affect the discontinuity-continuity effects at prosodic boundaries of distinct levels would be investigated. The results of acoustic analysis reveal the following findings: (1) The discontinuity effect is mainly influenced by the boundary level types, while the continuity effect is primarily influenced by the focus position; (2) When the focus is positioned before or after the prosodic boundary, the focus context tends to weaken the control of the boundary level over the discontinuity and continuity effects. When the focus coincides with the boundary or is at the sentence-final position, the focus context tends to enhance the control of the boundary level over the discontinuity and continuity effects; (3) Focus and the prosodic hierarchy are two independent encoding systems, each with its own autonomy. However, both systems share prosodic resources in speech production, leading to cooperation and competition between the two to achieve a balanced intonational state. The impact of different focus positions in natural speech on the “discontinuity-continuity” effects at different levels of prosodic boundaries in natural speech highlights this inherent contradiction.
