Women in Post-World War II America: Portrayals, Stereotypes, and Challenges

This essay examines the portrayal of women in post-World War II America, focusing on the perpetuation of gender stereotypes and challenges faced by women in the era. Through historical and visual analysis of primary sources, namely a Coca-Cola poster and the iconic V-J Day in Times Square photograph, the study reveals the complexities underlying societal attitudes towards women during this transformative period. The Coca-Cola poster exemplifies the idealized image of women as submissive caregivers, despite their growing role in the workforce. Similarly, the analysis of the V-J Day photograph unveils the contrast between the perceived romance and the reality of non-consensual interaction, shedding light on the evolving understanding of consent and the limitations of prevailing gender norms. By juxtaposing historical context and visual representation, this research underscores the nuanced interplay between media imagery and the evolving societal roles of women in post-war America. The study contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the challenges and representations women faced in shaping the post-war landscape.

Peculiarities of the Latin American Independence Revolutions: A Comparative Study with the American Revolution

This paper aims to analyze the Latin American independence revolutions from a social and ideological perspective to contribute to revising the conventional wisdom of Latin American revolutionary history. The method chosen is a comparison between the aforementioned revolutions and the American Revolution, helping to demonstrate how, far from being a simple deviation or a failure, the Latin American independence revolutions had their own traits. The paper tries to answer mainly three questions: how Latin America and America received the enlightenment idea, how those ideas affected their revolutionary process, and how both regions rebuilt and restructured after the revolution.

Alexander's Eastern Campaigns for Religious Change in the Mediterranean Region

Alexander's Eastern Expedition was one of the most brilliant expeditions in the world's military history. Although Alexander's Eastern Expedition brought profound disasters to the people of Eurasia and Africa, the process of accompanying the Eastern invasion objectively made the spread of Greek culture to the East and the process of infiltration of Oriental culture into Greek culture. At that time, religion and culture were inseparable under the system of the unity of church and state. As a result of the dispersal and fusion of primitive religions during this period, the mainstream religions that determined the values of the majority of the world's people in later times were formed, thus influencing the course of human civilization.

Influence of Dialect on the English Consonants Perception by English L2 learners: Evidence from Jiangsu Province for Chinese Native Speakers

The native language will have a negative transfer on the acquisition of second language. Dialects, as a branch of Chinese, also have an influence on English acquisition. The perception of consonants is one of the important foundations of English learning. This study will adopt discrimination as an experimental method to investigate whether there is a significant difference in the influence of different dialects on the perception of English consonants. Three major dialects in Jiangsu province will be taken as a study case to verify the hypothesis that there is a significant difference on the perception of English consonants in different dialects. This study will fill the gap in the overall research on the impact of three major dialects in Jiangsu province on the perception of English consonants, help English language learners with dialect background to reduce the influence of dialects on them and provide some teaching key points to teachers, especially for English language learners in Jiangsu province.

A Case Study of Digital Natives Using English Buzzword ‘cue’ in Vocabulary Capacity in Second Language Acquisition in China

With the increasing fragmentation of people's reading habits and the prevalence of attention distractions, internet buzzwords, which focus on capturing the essence of events and reflecting the sentiments of the masses, have emerged and gained immense popularity online. However, even though there has been a series of research on this type of buzzword in China, most of the research on buzzwords tends to be limited to exploring the words’ evolution and their application in a certain region, leaving a huge gap in the relationship between the use of buzzwords and users’ vocabulary competence. Taking the buzzword ‘cue’ which is a typical “Anglo-Chinese style expression,” for example, the case study tries to provide a new perspective in hopes of finding out the appearance of vocabulary capacity in internet buzzwords. The proposed research will employ a mixed-methods approach, integrating semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions. The former will be used to compare different kinds of digital natives’ comprehension of the buzzword ‘cue’ after dividing them into 3 groups by their frequency of using electronic products. Simultaneously, a corpus of comments or responses will be gathered during the focus group discussions, aiming to discern any potential correlation between vocabulary competence and the use of buzzwords.

Analyzing Video Communication Strategies of Chinese International Student Vloggers from a Cross-Cultural Perspective

The number of vloggers identified as “Chinese international students” on social media has been steadily increasing in recent years. This can be attributed to two key factors. Firstly, the growth of the international education industry has provided more opportunities for Chinese students to study abroad and gain firsthand experience of foreign cultures. Secondly, the popularity of social media platforms in China has encouraged individuals to create diverse content, including vlogs. These Chinese international students have gained popularity as content creators on Bilibili. Through their vlogs, they act as cultural ambassadors, providing relatable guidance for audiences to explore and comprehend the similarities and differences between foreign cultures and their own. This study focuses on five influential vloggers who identify as “international students” on Bilibili, analyzing the language, themes, and characteristics of their top ten-ranked videos. The findings indicate that these vlogs utilize a combination of languages, tackle youthful themes, and explore socially relevant topics to elucidate cross-cultural content, and both highlight and bridge the challenges in cross-cultural communication.

How Art Has Been a Window to the Post-War Generation in Japan

In this research, our primary focus revolves around the role of art as a lens through which we can examine the impact of World War II on Japanese citizens, with a particular emphasis on the post-war generation. Two renowned Japanese contemporary artists, Nara Yoshimoto and Takashi Murakami, are central to our study. While their artworks may not seem directly related to the war at first glance, a closer examination reveals that both artists use metaphorical expressions to convey the fear and aftermath of the war. Through this study, I also found that both artists experienced the war's effects during childhood due to the bombings that marked its conclusion. This analysis explores how the Japanese perceive themselves in the aftermath of the war. Rather than addressing the topic directly, they often employ metaphorical references. The significance of this study lies in shedding light on the indirect ways in which the Japanese people reflect on their post-war identity and the lasting impact of World War II.

Disney Princess Movies' Development and Dilemmas — From a Feminist Perspective

The purpose of this study is to critically analyze the image of Disney princesses using a feminist perspective. The study aims to explore the positive and negative impacts of the image of princesses and how it has influenced film making as social mores have changed and women's liberation has been promoted. The study explores the ways in which women have been portrayed throughout history through exhaustive case studies, demonstrating how princesses have changed in response to the times in which they have been portrayed. This study recognizes that while significant progress has been made in portraying princesses as more autonomous and powerful, prejudices and fundamental limitations remain. By examining these issues, this study seeks to reveal that the image of the princess still needs to be improved to better align with modern feminist values. It also calls on Disney to be brave enough to break out of the current image of princesses as well as the storytelling framework, and to explore more possibilities in female characters

Today's College Students' Aesthetic Mechanisms from an Algorithmic Re-domestication Perspective

The emergence of short video platforms has undeniably brought about a significant transformation in society. The process of re-domestication involves the adaptation of individuals' interactions with and utilization of previous technologies. The advent of the internet and the subsequent proliferation of novel social media platforms have engendered a plethora of new societal impacts. Social media platforms, including TikTok, are believed to have a substantial influence on the aesthetic preferences of college students. The choice to re-domesticate the media is a rebellion against the more anxiety-inducing aspects of society. It is apparent from casual conversations that present-day university students exhibit a discerning mindset when confronted with aesthetic unease stemming from TikTok algorithms. Individuals continue to prioritize their initial choices and demonstrate this through practical application, thereby reconfiguring the algorithms to align with their personal aesthetic tastes. A significant proportion of college students engage in critical analysis of media information, expressing a sense of disillusionment towards the prevalence of comparisons seen on the internet.

The Relationship Between the Usage of Memes on Social Media in the Chinese Internet and a Sense of Belonging

The concept of "meme" was introduced in 1976, and with the development of the internet, memes have gradually become a cultural phenomenon on social media. As a semantic collection, memes possess unique meanings that can create a distinct hidden information space for those who use them. During dissemination, individuals who do not understand the meaning of a meme are filtered out, forming a group of those who understand it. Within this group, people may develop a sense of belonging. In order to investigate whether Chinese internet users experience a sense of belonging when using memes and explore the relationship between user engagement and the strength of this sense of belonging when using memes, this study employed a questionnaire-based approach. By analyzing the level of meme usage participation and the sense of belonging experienced by Chinese internet users, the research sought to uncover the correlation between these two factors. The study utilized graphical analysis to reveal a certain degree of correlation.

The Variations in People's Daily’s Framing on Different Online Platforms

Based on framing theory, this study compares the differences between the most authoritative and influential newspapers in China, and the People's Daily's news coverage on four online platforms, including the Chinese official website, the English official website, Weibo, and Twitter. By collecting and analyzing the media coverage of People's Daily on July 1 (known as the Party's Day of the Communist Party of China) and July 8, this study argues that People's Daily selects and constructs coverage differently on four platforms, trying to adapt to the specific character of various audiences and platforms. The findings indicate that the influence of the Party’s Day on People’s Daily’s coverage was more reflected on Chinese platforms, and People's Daily constructs different narratives in two dimensions: website - social media and China-foreign news. This study adopts the research method of quantitative statistics and content analysis to investigate the changes in People's Daily due to different platforms, which will provide new insights into People's Daily's reporting strategy and value orientation.

Choose to Be More Individualistic or Collectivistic? A Reflection on Marriage Practice in Contemporary Chinese Society

This paper explores the evolving dynamics of individualism and collectivism within the context of Chinese modernization, particularly in the realm of marriage practices. Drawing upon Hofstede’s cultural dimensions theory, this research conducts two case studies of nominal marriage and marriage migration among rural migrants to assess whether social value in contemporary society reflects a shifting balance between these two values. It finds that there is a trend of departure between biological small self and societal greater self under the modernized environment. Though emerging attention has been paid to individualistic desires for seeking true loves, people still value their social identity when the small- and great- self conflict with each other, possibly through making a compromise to orthodoxy or wrapping themselves in the cloak of individualism to integrate into the so-called modernized urbanites group. Thus, it also indicates that it is hard to define a certain national culture whether appears more individualistic or collectivistic since it depends on what scale it would be measured.

How Did Medieval Ecclesiastical Criminal Law Impact the Ideology of Contemporary European Criminal Law

This paper explores the correlation between medieval ecclesiastical criminal law and contemporary European criminal law, as well as how the former has influenced the ideology of the latter. This work initially presents the contextual background and rationale for the chosen topic, subsequently provides a comprehensive overview of existing research in this field, and subsequently advances three hypotheses in the main body of the paper: the transition from customary law to written law, the perpetuation of original sin theory, and the establishment of theoretical principles within criminal law. These hypotheses are then systematically examined to derive conclusive findings. Based on my research, it can conclude that all three hypotheses hold true. This investigation contributes to bridging an intentional gap overlooked by theoretical constructions and approaching an authentic understanding of history.

The third hypothesis suggests developing a satellite launch facility and offering services to nations like China and Russia in order to promote a knowledge-based economy. These hypotheses are supported by the argument's reasoning and supporting data. It highlights the necessity of technological development, international partnerships, and diversification to end poverty in Mongolia. With the correct policies and cooperation among stakeholders, sustainable development is possible, as the paragraph highlights

Approaches to Metaphor: Cognitive-linguistic and Philosophical Perspectives

Metaphor has been a significant topic of discussion in several academic fields besides being extensively used in daily life. This article explores the interdisciplinary study of metaphor, a complex and connotative concept that has been the primary concern across various disciplines, including linguistics, philosophy, literature, and other humanities. The article presents multiperspective theories and metaphor analysis from the said disciplines to provide a more holistic understanding of metaphor. This includes analyzing metaphors in analytic philosophy and cognitive science, primarily focusing on the conceptual metaphor theory (CMT) developed by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, complemented by analysis of the relevance theory, the blending theory, etc. While there are criticisms of CMT, it remains an influential theory in studying metaphor. The article also discusses the relevance theory, which suggests that using metaphors in speech can help achieve optimal relevancy, and the blending theory, which proposes that metaphors involve mapping elements from one mental space onto another to create a blended mental space that combines elements of both. This paper also addresses continental philosophers' usage or account of metaphor, from Kant to Derrida, in establishing their arguments. The essay then discusses and integrates ideas in metaphor studies from the perspectives of semantics and pragmatics. Finally, the article emphasizes the importance of bridging the gap between abstract conceptualizations and concrete linguistic expressions to gain a holistic understanding of metaphor.

Anaximander’s world: Magic, Religion, and Science

The massive attention paid to science nowadays has already led to a prejudice against religions and magics. This paper is developed based on the unbalanced situation of ancient cultures and traditions against pure science. In this essay, Greek philosopher Anaximander’s ideas and worldviews compared to ancient magic and religions will be demonstrated according to the passed down records. In order to fully cover his ideas, the essay is separated into three main parts, Thales’s, Anaximander’s, and Anaximene’s ideas, making sure that every significant influence on him and the correlation among his ideas is incorporated. With the reappearance of Anaximander’s claims, we wish to clarify the compact relationships between magic, religions, and early science and the blending elements in Anaximander’s world. Moreover, the triple helix of these three crucial humanity topics is able to correct the one-sided mistakes caused by pure rationality and to reform a mentally comprehensive and physically fast developing world.
