As an auxiliary chatting method, WeChat emojis have played an important role in people’s language communication. As an emerging field, it has received extensive attention from linguistics in recent years. Based on the language meta-functions of Halliday, this paper will combine emoji with different age groups of people, and use multi-modal discourse analysis to deeply explore the ideational function, interpersonal function and textual function when different age groups use WeChat emoji and refine their internal reasons.
